Some of the Greats

In this strange, postmodern age of information, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the vast landscape of our digital world, and yet, as an artist, the internet is one of my favourite ways to find inspiration. Since it is my tenth time rambling to you all, I thought it would be nice to share a list of very cool people who I follow online who create very cool things. This list could go on for days, so I’ve decided to just include a few favs (however I may also shout out some more great artsy people on my Instagram story). The internet doesn’t always have to be all brainrot and evil, you can watch and listen to some pretty amazing people there too!

Alexa Chung: model, designer, TV personality, tumblr cool girl.

I first discovered Alexa Chung when I was an awkward,  tumblr-obsessed teenager. I adored her style (still do) and loved that she looked a little bit like me (i.e. pale, brunette and lanky) instead of the bronzed blondes I was used to seeing everywhere. She is witty, charming and classy and was a key figure in the evolution of my style and career-goals.

Hugh Van Cuylenburg: author, podcast host, resilience guy.

Hugh Van Cuylenburg is the creator of The Resilience Project and one third of the faces of The Imperfects podcast. The Imperfects is without a doubt my favourite podcast and a number of episodes have genuinely changed my perspective on the world. Hugh is genuine, humble and thoughtful and his work inspires me to get out there and do good things. I might paint him for the Archibald Prize one day.

Greta Gerwig: director, cinematic genius.

I had never cared about film directors until I watched Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. The way in which that film was shot was something I had never seen before- it had a woman’s touch all over (it in the best way possible). Ladybird and Barbie similarly addressed girlhood and womanhood with realism and raw emotion. I recently learned that Greta worked day jobs until she was 26. Her success gives me hope and TikTok edits of her movies give me tears (in a good way).

Andrew Hozier-Byrne: Singer/Songwriter, 6’4” forest faerie creature (allegedly actually a human man).

Listening to Hozier makes me feel like the fairy that I always wished I was as a child. His music is the soundtrack to a lot of my artmaking (alongside Bon Iver, Noah Kahan, Big Thief and the likes). If I can paint a picture that feels like a Hozier song, or write anything even half as good as his songs, I will feel entirely accomplished as an artist. He also just seems like a lovely guy.

Following people like this online helps me decide who I want to be and learn how I’m supposed to get there. There are so many beautiful, creative people out there to fill your digital feeds and inspire all of your future creations. We are a mosaic of everything we consume, including media, so make yourself a pretty one. Listen to good people, make good things, be good.
